The difficult part is no longer finding “a bus to the Great Wall.” It is filtering out instructions that were correct several years ago. The two stale routes I would ignore are **877 from Deshengmen** and **S2 from Huangtudian**. Mixing modes on the same day rarely helps unless live return availability creates a clear reason; a simple round trip is easier to manage. ## Option 1: high-speed train from Qinghe Search the official [12306 English site](https://www.12306.cn/en/index.html) or app using these exact stations: - **From:** Qinghe (清河) - **To:** Badaling Great Wall (八达岭长城) That destination name matters. **Badaling Great Wall railway station** is the underground high-speed station. **Badaling station** is associated with the S2 suburban line. Selecting the wrong one changes both the train and the journey. Qinghe is usually the most practical departure point for central-Beijing visitors because it connects to the subway and has more useful Badaling services than relying on one ideal departure elsewhere. Beijing North can also appear in live results. Let 12306 show the current options rather than copying a static train number from an article. Some services reach Badaling in under half an hour, but that is not your hotel-to-wall time. Add: 1. the subway ride to Qinghe; 2. railway security and passport checks; 3. time to find the correct waiting area and gate; 4. the exit from Badaling Great Wall station; and 5. the walk from the station toward the scenic-area entrance. Badaling Great Wall station is about **102 metres underground**. Do not schedule a return train as if the platform sat beside the ticket gate. Finish the wall early enough to descend, walk back, clear station checks and reach the correct level without running. ### The return-ticket rule Buy the outbound and return together when you commit to a train day. A sold-out or badly timed return creates a problem that the fast outbound ride cannot solve. The exact timetable and fare are dynamic; any “best train number” published here may be wrong by the time you travel. My practical return buffer is conservative: leave the wall route with enough time for the cable facility or stairs, the station walk and the deep descent. Treat the train's departure time as a gate deadline, not the moment you should arrive at the building. ## Option 2: direct Bus 877 from Beitucheng This is where old English-language guides are most likely to send you to the wrong place. Beijing Public Transport officially moved Bus 877 to **Beitucheng subway station (地铁北土城站)** in March 2025. The outbound boarding area is in the parking area near the **northeast side of exits B/C**. Subway Lines 8 and 10 serve Beitucheng. The route is one-stop and direct between Beitucheng and Badaling. It is cheap and simple once you are on the official bus, but road traffic still controls the journey time. ### Official operating window | Season | Beitucheng → Badaling | Badaling → Beitucheng | |---|---:|---:| | Apr 1–Nov 15 | 06:00–12:30 | 10:30–17:00 | | Nov 16–Mar 31 | 06:30–12:30 | 11:00–16:30 | These are service windows, not a promise that the last vehicle will suit your wall route. Go early and avoid planning around the final outbound or return departure. At the boarding area, follow official **877** signs, uniformed transit staff and the vehicle display. Do not follow an unofficial person who says the public bus has stopped, has moved again, or cannot reach the useful entrance unless an official notice confirms it. Commercial shuttles can be legitimate products, but they are not Bus 877 and should not be sold to you through confusion. ## What happened to the S2 train? The S2 line still exists, but the central-city instructions changed. From **October 25, 2025**, its southern operating section shifted from **Huangtudian** to **Nankou**. Official notices also warned that services could be limited while Nankou station works continued. That makes S2 a niche choice for most overseas visitors staying in central Beijing. Reaching Nankou first can cancel the simplicity that older articles promise. Check current railway information if the experience of taking S2 matters to you; otherwise use high-speed rail or Bus 877. In other words: do not ask whether S2 is scenic before checking whether its current origin is convenient for your hotel. ## When a private driver is worth it A driver is not automatically the “luxury” choice. It becomes rational when it removes the hardest part of your day. Price a driver when: - two or more people are sharing the car; - someone struggles with long station walks, escalators or stairs; - you are carrying luggage; - you want a hotel pickup before public transport becomes comfortable; - you need a child seat and can confirm one in advance; or - you want to stop somewhere else without rebuilding the whole return plan. Confirm the pickup point, waiting time, tolls, parking, child seat, cancellation rule and whether the quoted price is for the car or per person. A “driver” does not need to be a guide; clarity about the return meeting point is more useful than an unwanted shopping stop. ## North or south side at Badaling? Badaling is not one continuous flat promenade. The north and south routes lead to different ridges, and the cable facilities do not drop you at the same place. | Priority | Start with | |---|---| | First visit, classic watchtower views, stronger legs | North route | | Shorter outing, less appetite for steep climbs | South route | | Limited mobility | Confirm the operating cable facility and accessible route before committing | | Train departure controls the day | The side that lets you turn around early without chasing a numbered tower | My mistake to avoid is treating “North 8” or another tower number as a compulsory achievement. The view becomes impressive well before the furthest point. Decide a turnaround time first, then let weather, crowds and legs determine the distance. Cableways and the south-side ground cable can close or change hours because of weather, maintenance or seasonal operations. Check the [official Badaling website](https://www.badaling.cn/) on the day rather than assuming the shortcut will operate. ## A realistic day by high-speed train | Time block | A workable plan | |---|---| | Early morning | Subway to Qinghe with passport and both train bookings ready | | Before departure | Clear security, find the gate and board without relying on a last-minute sprint | | Morning | Arrive at Badaling Great Wall station, exit and walk toward the scenic area | | Late morning to early afternoon | Choose one ridge, turn around before fatigue dictates the decision | | Mid-afternoon | Leave the wall, return to the station with a generous vertical-circulation buffer | | Evening | Dinner back in Beijing; do not attach a timed headline attraction to this day | Keep dinner flexible and skip any evening booking that becomes expensive if the return slips. A Great Wall day already contains enough fixed points. ## A realistic day by Bus 877 Arrive at Beitucheng early, identify the official line and board the first convenient bus. The outbound ride is more exposed to traffic than the train, so do not assume an exact arrival minute. At Badaling, photograph the current return boarding point before you start walking. Use a phone alarm for your **leave-the-wall time**, not just the last bus time. Your route back includes descending, walking to the bus area, finding the queue and waiting to board. On crowded dates, leave more margin or use rail instead. ## Tickets, opening hours and what to carry Beijing's official English visitor information currently lists daytime Badaling admission at **RMB 40 in the peak season** and **RMB 35 in the off-season**, with discounted categories. Day opening hours are listed as **06:30–16:30 from April through October** and **07:30–16:00 from November through March**. Operations can change for weather, maintenance, crowd control and special events. The official Badaling site supports advance reservation and on-site purchase. On a busy weekend or holiday, do not leave the admission decision until arrival just because walk-up purchase can be available. Carry the same passport used for train and attraction bookings. Bring: - passport; - phone with the 12306 booking and return plan available offline; - water and sun protection in warm months; - windproof layers in cold months; - shoes with reliable grip; and - a battery pack that complies with current China travel rules. Badaling offers free admission categories for some minors, seniors and visitors with disabilities when valid documents meet the current rules. Check the official terms before assuming an overseas document will be processed in the same way as a mainland ID. ## Six mistakes to avoid 1. **Going to Deshengmen for Bus 877.** The official boarding point moved to Beitucheng. 2. **Searching “Badaling” instead of “Badaling Great Wall” in 12306.** They refer to different rail services/stations. 3. **Following an old Huangtudian S2 guide.** The S2 southern section now starts at Nankou. 4. **Buying only the outbound train on a busy date.** The return is part of the plan, not an afterthought. 5. **Accepting an unofficial redirect near the bus area.** Confirm the vehicle number and official signs yourself. 6. **Staying on the wall until the transport deadline.** You still need time to descend, walk and clear station or bus-queue friction. ## Is Badaling the right Great Wall section for you? Choose Badaling if your main question is, “Can I reach the Great Wall independently without hiring a tour?” Its rail, bus and visitor infrastructure make the answer easier than at most sections. Choose Mutianyu if scenery, a less urbanized feel and a more relaxed wall experience matter more than direct public transport. Badaling's reputation for crowds is deserved on peak dates, but “crowded” and “wrong choice” are not synonyms. A traveler who reaches the wall confidently, has a reserved return and can adapt the walking distance may have a better day here than someone who chose a quieter section with a transport plan they do not understand. ## Frequently asked questions ### Does Bus 877 still leave from Deshengmen? No. Beijing Public Transport moved the official route to Beitucheng subway station in March 2025. Treat current 877 signs and official notices as authoritative. ### Is high-speed rail or Bus 877 faster? The train ride is faster and avoids road traffic, but your total time includes reaching Qinghe, security, waiting and the deep Badaling station. Bus 877 is direct but traffic-dependent. Compare hotel-to-boarding time, not just the vehicle time. ### Can I take the high-speed train one way and Bus 877 back? Yes, the modes do not need to match. A same-mode round trip is still easier because it reduces uncertainty. Mix them only when live availability or your hotel location creates a clear advantage. ### Can I visit Badaling during a Beijing airport layover? Sometimes, but this normal-stay route is the wrong planning model. Airport entry, luggage, airport location and the flight return buffer dominate the decision.
