Chongqing Travel Guide (2026): 3-Day Itinerary, Map & Tips

Allow three full days for a first trip to central Chongqing. Add a fourth day for Wulong, Dazu or another excursion outside the urban core; trying to combine one of them with a full city day makes both parts rushed.

Chongqing is also where a flat map fails fastest. A road that looks one block away may sit several floors above you, and a station exit may open into a shopping centre. Plan each day on one side of the river and within one band of elevation, then use the evening for the view that route naturally creates. This reduces unnecessary stairs, bridge traffic and repeated river crossings.

A realistic three-day Chongqing plan

Day 1: understand the stacked centre

Begin around Jiefangbei (解放碑), then walk downhill through Shibati (十八梯) or choose the more residential texture of Shancheng Trail (山城巷). Do not promise yourself both plus Baixiangju before lunch: the vertical connections take longer than the map suggests.

Save Hongya Cave for dusk, but treat it as a lighting subject rather than a whole evening attraction. Walk through briefly, then move to Qiansimen Bridge or the opposite Jiangbeizui bank, where the tiered buildings and river edge become visible as one composition.

Day 2: monorail, hillside streets and local nightlife

Ride to Liziba (李子坝) for the monorail passing through a residential building. The viewing platform is the quick stop; the more interesting route continues uphill or west toward E’ling Park and Testbed 2 (鹅岭二厂). This is the day to accept stairs and slow down.

Finish in Guanyinqiao (观音桥) if you want restaurants, late-night food and a more local commercial centre. It is not on the same compact walking loop as Hongya Cave, so pairing it with the west-central route is cleaner than crossing back and forth on day one.

Day 3: choose history or river space

Choose Ciqikou (磁器口) early if you want an old commercial town and can tolerate crowds, or choose the Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆) for a more contextual morning. Continue to Chaotianmen (朝天门) for the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.

At night, move to Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街) or Nanbin Road (南滨路). The south bank gives you the clearest look back at the Yuzhong peninsula. Use the Cyberpunk City China night route for exact sequencing and photo viewpoints.

Which attractions are actually worth your time?

Jiefangbei + Shibati: the easiest first introduction to central Chongqing.
Hongya Cave from outside: famous, crowded and visually strongest from across the water or bridge.
Liziba + E’ling: a coherent half-day about infrastructure and elevation.
Longmenhao / Nanbin Road: the best reason to cross to the south bank near sunset.
Ciqikou: worthwhile early, but not the only place to look for older Chongqing.

Where to stay

Jiefangbei is the safest first-trip answer. It puts the central peninsula, food streets and several rail stations within reach. Choose Jiangbeizui for skyline hotels and river views, Guanyinqiao for nightlife and a more local commercial district, or Nanbin Road for a quieter room view at the cost of more cross-river travel.

How to navigate a city with several ground floors

Save both the English and Chinese destination names.
Check the station exit, not only the station.
Use rail for cross-city movement and a local map app for the final vertical route.
If a pedestrian route suddenly doubles back, it may be finding a ramp or staircase rather than making a mistake.

Chongqing publishes an official rail network map through the municipal transport commission. Keep a current version because extensions and interchange arrangements change.

Food without turning the trip into a spice test

Chongqing hotpot is built around beef tallow, chilli and Sichuan pepper. Ask for 微辣 (wēi là, mild) unless you already know your tolerance; local “mild” can still be intense. A divided pot is useful for mixed groups. Other easy entries are Chongqing noodles (重庆小面), sour-and-spicy noodles, grilled fish and late-night skewers.

Choose busy neighbourhood restaurants with clear menus and recent local reviews rather than assuming the loudest storefront beside a landmark is the best. Prices and queue systems change too quickly for a static guide to promise a fixed restaurant bill.

Airport and arrival

Jiangbei International Airport now operates T2, T3A and T3B. T3B opened in April 2025, so older guides that describe only T2 and T3A are incomplete. Confirm the terminal shown by your airline before leaving the hotel. Line 10 serves the T3 area; T2 is served by Lines 10 and 3. When to go and what to pack

Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for long outdoor routes. Summer is hot, humid and often hazy; start exposed walks early and use the evening for skyline views. Winter can be damp and grey. In every season, shoes with reliable grip matter more here than dress shoes: stone steps and sloped lanes can become slick after rain.
