PUDONG AIRPORT HOTELS
Shanghai Pudong Airport hotels: walk, shuttle or city stay?
Compare hotels at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG): walkable terminal stays, free-shuttle hotels, early-flight choices and overnight layover checks.
On this pageChoose by transfer type
Searches for hotel Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Pudong airport hotel usually hide three different decisions: pay more to walk to the terminal, use a scheduled hotel shuttle, or stay closer to Shanghai and travel back later. “Near PVG” is not precise enough. Roads, terminal loops and shuttle waiting can turn a short map distance into a poor early-flight plan.
Which Pudong Airport hotel should you book?
This is a practical shortlist, not a paid ranking. Prices change by date, so the table compares the part that matters most at an airport: how you reach the terminal.
| Hotel to compare | Transfer to PVG | Best for | Confirm before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Airport | Walk to T1 or T2 | Earliest flights, late arrivals and travelers who want to remove shuttle risk | Walking route from your terminal; room cancellation terms |
| Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Shanghai Pudong Airport | Hotel airport shuttle | Full-service overnight stay close to PVG | Current first/last bus, reservation rule and terminal order |
| Holiday Inn Express Shanghai Pudong Airport | Daily hotel airport bus | Mid-range stay when its timetable matches | Exact pickup door and the outbound bus for your flight |
| Da Zhong Airport Hotel | Terminal-area option commonly sold for PVG | Travelers comparing another no-cross-city stay | Current walking directions, exact building/room type and whether the route is fully indoors |
The Shanghai Airport Authority includes all four properties in its PVG Quality Hotels Alliance. That confirms they are airport-oriented hotels, but it does not make their transfer methods identical. For the first three, the linked hotel-brand pages provide the clearest current English-language transfer information. Da Zhong remains worth comparing because travelers will see it on booking sites, but its current English first-party access instructions are less clear, so verify before treating it as walkable.
Where PVG sits in Shanghai
PVG is roughly 30 km from central Shanghai. The map also explains why a hotel in Lujiazui can have “Pudong” in its name while still being unsuitable for a 4:00 am terminal arrival. Hongqiao Airport (SHA) is the other side of the city; always verify the airport code before booking.
Is there a hotel inside Pudong Airport?
The useful distinction is walkable from the terminal versus requiring a vehicle, not whether a booking site uses the word “inside.” IHG describes Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Airport as being within “Walking distance to Pudong Airport Terminal1&2.” Its transport page lists no airport shuttle, which is consistent with a terminal walk rather than a bus transfer.
Follow the hotel and terminal signs after entering the public, landside area. Do not assume that a hotel described as “at PVG” is airside beyond immigration or security. If you will not enter China, a landside room may be unusable.
Da Zhong Airport Hotel is another terminal-area name that appears frequently in hotel results. It is a member of the airport’s Quality Hotels Alliance, but confirm the exact room product and walking instructions. Similar names and different room categories can make booking listings confusing.
Hotels with a free PVG shuttle
A free shuttle can save money, but “free airport shuttle” does not answer the questions that decide whether you catch the flight. Timetables change, some trips require advance booking, and one bus may call at both terminals or another hotel before reaching yours.
Wyndham advertises a free PVG shuttle at Ramada Plaza and tells guests to contact the hotel for operating hours. IHG says Holiday Inn Express is about 2.7 km from PVG and provides airport buses every day, but its general hotel page does not promise that every flight time is covered.
Send the hotel your flight number and ask for these details in writing:
- What is the first hotel-to-airport departure on my checkout date?
- Is a seat reservation required?
- Does the bus stop at T1, T2 or both, and in which order?
- Where exactly is the airport pickup point: floor, door and waiting area?
- What should I do if immigration or baggage claim makes me miss the planned pickup?
One recurring real-world problem is that the pickup point may be on a different floor from Arrivals. Save the written instructions or a screenshot before flying; a data-only eSIM may not let you call the front desk.
Early flight and late arrival plans
For a flight around 6:00–8:00 am
Work backward from the airline’s check-in guidance. For an international flight, many travelers plan to be at the terminal about three hours early. A 7:00 am departure may therefore require a terminal arrival around 4:00 am, before normal metro and Maglev service can solve the journey.
The walkable Holiday Inn removes the bus timetable from the calculation. A shuttle hotel can still work, but only after the property confirms a sufficiently early outbound departure. Do not infer tomorrow morning’s bus from the pickup service you used tonight.
For an arrival after the last train
A staffed hotel with a written pickup plan is more useful than the lowest room price. Save the hotel’s Chinese name, address, telephone number and terminal pickup instructions before departure. If the bus is delayed or unclear, use the official taxi queue rather than an unsolicited driver in the arrivals hall.
At check-in, reserve the return bus and ask staff to write down the lobby departure time. Be downstairs with checkout complete at least ten minutes early; airport buses usually leave to a schedule rather than waiting for one room.
Overnight layover: check immigration before booking
The named hotels on this page are landside stays. An international transit passenger may need to clear immigration, collect checked baggage and pass security again the next day. Whether that is possible depends on nationality, itinerary, ticketing and current entry or transit rules.
Before buying a non-refundable room, confirm with the airline whether your bags are checked through and whether you are eligible to enter China for the overnight stay. Our 240-hour transit guide explains the trip structure, but the airline and immigration authorities make the travel-day decision.
If you must remain airside, do not assume that a public-area airport hotel will be accessible. Ask the airline or Shanghai Airport Authority about the current airside rest, lounge or transit-hotel options for your concourse.
Four useful hotel zones around PVG
| Zone | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Between or immediately beside T1/T2 | Earliest flights and least transfer risk | Usually higher room price |
| Airport road / shuttle hotels | One-night stop with a confirmed bus | Timetable, pickup door and terminal order vary |
| Chuansha | Restaurants, convenience stores and lower room rates | Still requires a road transfer for an early flight |
| Longyang Road | A city evening plus a later departure | Not near the terminal; rail hours still control the plan |
Chuansha is useful when you arrive in the afternoon and want food or local services outside a hotel. It is not a terminal stay. Check the actual road journey, not straight-line distance, and make sure a pre-dawn car or shuttle is available.
When Longyang Road is better
Longyang Road connects the Maglev with Metro Lines 2, 7, 16 and 18. It can be a better compromise when you want an evening in Shanghai and your flight leaves late enough for the next morning’s rail timetable.
It is the wrong choice for a very early flight unless you are prepared to use a taxi or pre-booked car. Add the hotel-to-station walk, train waiting, terminal walking and airline check-in deadline; do not compare only the Maglev’s advertised ride time.
Pudong district is not Pudong Airport
Hotels in Lujiazui, Century Avenue and the Pudong financial area can be 30–40 km from PVG. A chain name followed by “Shanghai Pudong” may describe the district rather than airport proximity.
The Four Points by Sheraton Shanghai, Pudong official page, for example, lists PVG roughly 38 km away and no airport shuttle. That does not make it a poor city hotel; it makes it the wrong answer to a search for a terminal hotel.
Booking checklist
- Airport code is PVG, not SHA.
- Flight terminal and date are correct.
- Hotel is walkable or the required shuttle has been confirmed.
- Pickup instructions include floor, door and contact method.
- Outbound shuttle reaches the correct terminal early enough.
- Reception is staffed when your flight arrives.
- You can clear immigration if the room is landside.
- Cancellation terms still work if the flight changes.
When to stay in central Shanghai instead
Stay in central Shanghai when the flight leaves late morning or afternoon and you want to use the evening well. Metro Line 2 reaches PVG from the center, while the Maglev runs from Longyang Road; both are operating-hours decisions, not 24-hour transfers.
For the full comparison of Metro, Maglev and taxi, use our Pudong Airport to city guide. To compare PVG with Hongqiao and understand the Airport Link Line, use the Shanghai airports guide.
