SHENZHEN METRO
Use Shenzhen Metro without choosing the wrong border or gate
Ride Shenzhen Metro with an international bank card, Alipay or a ticket; connect Airport Line 11 and choose the correct station for Lo Wu, Futian, Huanggang or Liantang borders.
- International card trial
- Airport Line 11
- Hong Kong border stations
Shenzhen Metro is the easiest way to cross the city, but the network’s size hides two separate decisions: how you will pay, and which station actually connects to your airport, hotel or Hong Kong border. Solve those before entering security.
Since 30 June 2026, Shenzhen has been trialling international-bank-card Tap-to-Ride across all 17 operating lines. Use a gate showing your card network, tap the same physical card or mobile-wallet token out, and keep a backup. The trial does not yet mean every gate accepts every international card.
Need the lines before the payment details? Open the Shenzhen Metro map for all 17 lines, station order, English and Chinese names, Airport Line 11 and border connections.
Your first ride, step by step
- 01Save the full destination.
Keep the Chinese station name, line number and exit in one screenshot. A pin alone is not enough at a large interchange.
- 02Pass security before the gates.
Bags go through the scanner. Keep your payment card and phone in hand rather than buried in the luggage.
- 03Choose a compatible gate.
International cards only work at gates showing the relevant network logo during the trial.
- 04Check direction by the next station.
Compare the first stop in your map app with the platform sign instead of relying only on the terminal name.
- 05Use the same token to exit.
A physical card and its version inside Apple Pay or another wallet are different tokens.
- 06Follow the planned exit.
Different exits can open on opposite sides of an expressway, mall or civic complex.
What international-card Tap-to-Ride actually covers
The official trial began across the 17 operating metro lines and 432 stations. Eligible contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards can be used at marked gates. A supported card linked to a mobile wallet can also work, subject to the issuer and device.
“Across the network” describes station and line coverage, not every gate. Shenzhen’s stated plan is to expand support to all gates by the end of 2026. Until then, scan the row of gates for the card logos or ask staff.
Three rules prevent most payment errors:
- One payment token per passenger.
- The same token at entry and exit.
- Do not change from a physical card to its phone-wallet version mid-journey.
If you ride Line 11 business class, tap at the business-class validator after entering the paid area. A normal gate tap alone does not upgrade the journey.
Four useful payment methods
| Method | Setup | Best for | Backup issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| International contactless card | None | One traveler, short visit | Issuer decline or unmarked gate |
| Alipay / WeChat transport code | Account and identity setup | Repeated metro rides | Wrong city/code, no data or verification delay |
| Single-journey ticket | Choose destination at station | Immediate fallback, families | Queue and separate tickets |
| Shenzhen Tong card | RMB 20 refundable deposit plus stored value | Longer stay, metro and buses | Purchase and refund take time |
Shenzhen Tong gives a 5% discount on normal metro fares. It is useful for a longer stay, but a bank card or single ticket is simpler for a two-day visit.
For Alipay, open Transport, select Shenzhen and activate the metro code. The ordinary payment QR is not the transport code. Set this up before reaching the station; identity checks are easier with stable data and time.
Fares
Shenzhen Metro uses distance-based fares. The published basic structure starts at RMB 2 for the first 4 km, then adds RMB 1 per 4 km from 4–12 km, per 6 km from 12–24 km, and per 8 km beyond 24 km.
The exact fare appears in the route planner or ticket machine. A cross-city trip can be cheap but long, so choose routes by time and transfers, not fare alone.
The five route decisions visitors make most often
| Journey | Metro decision | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Airport → Futian / Nanshan | Line 11 from Airport station | Last train, hotel exit and whether business class is useful |
| Futian Civic Center → Huaqiangbei | Short central journey; multiple station options | Huaqiangbei vs Huaqiang Road depending on the building |
| Futian → Nantou / Houhai / Shekou | Travel west; choose the exact Nanshan endpoint | Do not use one “Nanshan” pin for the whole district |
| Hotel → Hong Kong border | Match the correct port station | Border hours and onward Hong Kong transport |
| Shenzhen North → city | Lines 4, 5 and 6 connect at the rail hub | Train-station security and walking time |
Hong Kong borders: stations are not interchangeable
| Border | Shenzhen Metro connection | Current regular passenger hours* | Key warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lo Wu / Luohu | Line 1, Luohu | 06:30–00:00 | Best for Luohu and Shenzhen Railway Station, not western Shenzhen |
| Futian Port | Lines 4/10, Futian Checkpoint | 06:30–22:30 | Usually easiest for central Futian |
| Huanggang | Road crossing; plan road connection | 24 hours | Metro is not 24 hours |
| Shenzhen Bay | No direct metro gate at the border; use road/bus connection | 06:30–00:00 | Often best for Nanshan or Shekou |
| Liantang | Lines 2/8, Liantang Checkpoint | 07:00–22:00 | Useful for eastern Shenzhen |
*Regular hours checked 2 August 2026. Special holiday extensions can change the last crossing. Verify with Hong Kong Immigration on travel day.
The metro station is only one part of the border journey. Allow time to leave the train, walk through the port, complete both sides’ document checks and connect to the Hong Kong network. Passport entry rules remain separate from transport operations.
Airport Line 11
Airport station on Line 11 serves Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. It connects well to western Shenzhen and Futian. Keep the terminal walking time, security and station entrance in your airport buffer; “at Airport station” is not the same as standing at the check-in desk.
Train times change by direction and service adjustment. Use Shenzhen Airport or Shenzhen Metro’s current information on the day. If a late arrival is close to the final service, prepare a taxi or DiDi destination in Chinese before landing.
Line 11 has business-class cars. They cost more and require a second validation at a business-class verifier. They can be useful with luggage during a long ride, but ordinary cars are sufficient outside peaks.
Transfers, security and exits
Every station screens bags. Liquids may receive an extra check. Add a few minutes before the gate, and more at rail hubs.
At an interchange, signs show line numbers, colors and terminal directions. Compare the next station with your route. At the destination, follow the exit number before leaving the paid area. A wrong exit at Civic Center, Huaqiangbei or a large mall complex can add a difficult surface crossing.
Save the route offline. A screenshot is valid for navigation, but a screenshot of a live transport QR code is not a ticket.
When the gate rejects your card
Try this sequence once:
- Check that the gate displays your card network.
- Hold the card flat for one clean tap.
- If exiting, use the exact token used to enter.
- Check the bank app for a contactless or overseas-payment block.
- Ask station staff to inspect the open journey.
- Use Alipay’s transport code or buy a single ticket for the next ride.
Do not cycle through several cards while a journey remains open on the first one. Staff need that original card or device to resolve the fare state.
Useful Chinese:
我用这张卡进站了,但是出不去。
Wǒ yòng zhè zhāng kǎ jìnzhàn le, dànshì chū bu qù.
I entered with this card, but I cannot exit.
Common questions
Does Shenzhen Metro run 24 hours?
No. Times vary by station and direction. Huanggang’s border can operate 24 hours while the metro and connecting buses do not.
Can two people share one bank card?
Not for simultaneous journeys. Each passenger needs a separate card, device, code or ticket.
Is every station accessible with luggage?
Major stations have lifts, but the most convenient lift may be at a different exit. Check station signage and leave extra time at Airport and Shenzhen North.
Can I use Hong Kong’s Octopus everywhere?
Do not make that the only plan. Cross-border products and acceptance can change, while normal Shenzhen Metro options remain international card, transport QR, ticket and Shenzhen Tong.
